Let me just start by saying, I saw this fight a bit different than my colleague. I was also pretty incensed about the outcome even if I didn’t really show it Saturday night.
My apologies also for taking a week to get anything posted. Obviously, I need to work quicker and be more on the ball!
Canelo looked to take the early rounds, but I only really felt he won the first couple. The 3rd is when it appeared to me that GGG started to find his real rhythm, and he controlled the fight up until around round 11 where Canelo looked to try and steal rounds by coming out fast and trying to end the rounds with flurries. But if you only win the first 15 and last 15 seconds, you didn’t win the round.
I felt GGG showed why he’s a champion. Canelo looked good, but didn’t have the gas tank to keep up. And GGG’s chin is incredible, he ate some full on shots, and kept coming in to engage. Canelo didn’t seem to like that, it seemed like he did a lot of, ahem, running..
Something Robert and I were noticing, and both getting highly annoyed by, was the head shaking after a combination or solid punch would land. Like dudes, stop with that, and show that you weren’t hurt by coming forward and boxing! We thought we’d decide the winner by headshakes, but by the time we figured that out it was too late to start scoring them.
Anyway, this was a tremendous fight. I felt GGG probably won 8-4, 116-112. I could see a draw, or maybe even a slight Canelo win in a crazy universe, but the 118-110 was off the charts ridiculous. 10-2 Canelo? It’s no wonder Byrd was taken off the judging seat for a little while. She’s been on the bad end of some questionable scorecards, but I don’t know any that were this bad.
I hope for a rematch, maybe this time they can fight in GGG’s backyard. But I could see GGG fighting a lesser opponent and retiring. He gave it his all, but unfortunately he left it in the hands of the judges and boxing judges are especially known for err’ing on the side of human.
